A new research study suggests that the cost of the antibiotic Lamisil could be a significant factor in the cost of a long-term, costly antibiotic therapy.

Lead author Dr. John P. Hoey and colleagues at the University of Missouri, Columbia, found that in addition to the cost of treatment, patients had been given a lower dosage of a low-dose version of terbinafine.

Hoey and his colleagues studied the cost of terbinafine in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of terbinafine and other oral antifungals at a cost of $5,200. They found that terbinafine was significantly cheaper in the treatment group than in the control group.

The cost of the oral antifungal treatment was $3,500. When terbinafine was taken as an oral tablet, the cost was $4,600 for a 30-day supply, which was about $2,000 more than the cost of a 30-day supply of the same antibiotic.

Hoey and his colleagues found that patients who took the lower dose of the oral antifungal had a mean cost of $11,200 for a 30-day supply.

They did not find a difference in their costs between the treatment group and the control group. The cost of the oral antifungal is a significant factor in cost.

The authors report the results of the study in theJournal of the American Medical Association. They suggest that the cost of the oral antifungal treatment should be considered in patients who are willing to take terbinafine for a longer time.
